P L's writings probably is the most endearing part of his all-round personality. It is humour all the way. He mocks, parodies and laughs at the inconsistencies and contradictions in life, through his keen observations. But it has always been without malice. He never has hurt anyone. In his own words, ``My writing is primarily parody-based. I was the least bothered about its literary value or about its being outdated with the passage of time. I moved around in various fields of life, saw contradictions in the way people talked and behaved, and wrote about them. I was glad that readers enjoyed my books greatly. The smile on their faces is my acknowledgement. I couldn't ask for more."
Here's a glance at P L's books
P L says he had resolved not to write any travel accounts and the autobigraphy! He first broke his vow when he wrote `Apoorvaee' after he visited Europe, and then again when he penned autobiography, although the pictorial one.
If his humour is hilarious to the hilt, his character-sketches are compassionate to the core. And his travelogues, mostly based on foreign journeys, are no drab and stereotyped descriptions of the places. In fact, P L hated anybody coming up with a list of `tourist places,' whenever he set out for a journey. He deliberately avoided such `guided sight-seeings.' His travelogues are refreshingly different and exceedingly funny. He brought alive the countries he visited with his cheerful accounts of the peoples, customs, cultures et al. And all in his inimitable style. See how he captures and recreates the cleanliness of Singapore. "Singapore is a very clean city. Probably, there is no municipality here." Or his utter surprise at recovering a painting forgotten in a train, while travelling in Japan - "The station master had kept the painting with him with extreme cair. In India, such a sincere station-master would have ben dismissed!" While in London, he did not forget to visit the college where his favourite writer P G Wodehouse studied.
