This is, of course, being too modest. In reality, when P L's fingers move gently on the harmonium, the melody in it has the audience nodding their head to the tune. P L provided able accompaniment on harmonium to several renowned vocalists like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the late Vasantrao Deshpande, and Mallikarjun Mansoor. His harmonium cassettes became a part of every household.
A treasure trove of talent himself, P L always looks beyond himself to spot talent in others. In one such exploration, he listened to a children's orchestra at Varnanagar in Kolhapur district, which held him spellbound. He saw to it that it won its due acclaim and fame. He wrote articles in newspapers showering abundant praise on the child artistes.
The ear for music was inborn. Says P L: ``When my father sensed my strong liking for music, he bought me a harmonium. I started playing the instrument endlessly. I nurtured the ambition of becoming a great harmonium player like Govindrao Tembe. I did not become another Tembe, but I developed a good ear for music."
He took lessons in harmonium from Dattopant Rajopadhye at Bhaskar Sangeetalay. His training in harmonium helped him later in composing music. And what musical hits P L produced! From a devotional song like `Indrayani kathi,' to natyageet, to children's song like `Naach re mora' in Marathi film Devbappa, which had, and still has, little ones and grown-ups alike, tapping their feet to its tunes. As usual, the modest P L gives the credit of popularity of his songs to singers, lyricists and the accompanying instrumentalists.
