Even today when I see a stray dog, wet and shivering, I remember Charlie Chaplin, who had led a similar dog's life, who had suffered the pangs of starvation; who looked at the world with the same pitiful eyes. He was beaten to pulp by the filthy rich. He deployed every trick to rescue himself, made the kids laugh and laugh, and caused the laughing elders to suddenly introspect with a tear in their eyes. With his brilliant films, this joker transcended the confines of countries, religions, places, time and thousands of languages to become a world citizen.
"Another great human being to have lived with the faith that this entire world is my home, a man who led a life without bounds without crossing the limits, was Ravindranath Tagore. The two are two sides of a coin that is humanism. Whenever human beings themselves assaulted human values, the two became restless. That restlessness was brought home to the people through their art by the two major artists".
"Chaplin and Tagore sang their own different tunes. But both were artists at the core. Their goal was to make the life beautiful; with ugliness destroyed. I am fascinated by this goal of theirs".
I don't know when Charlie Chaplin and Ravindranath Tagore were consecrated on the altar in my mind. I have never been interested in idol worship, meditation and bhakti of the guru. But I have been led by their invisible hand all through my life just like a little child is led by an elder in the house. I think of Ravindranath and Chaplin as fellow-travellers leading me by the hand. I just didn't know when I surrendered myself to the two creators, who can make others like them instantaneously. I realized that the beauty of art is not merely an ornament enhancing the lustre of artistic creations but a value of life in itself, while I savored the work of these artists.
"One harvested blossoms of laughter through sadness and suffering, while the other sang hundreds of songs of happiness and grief, narrated stories and meditated over life to bring out the oneness in the human experience. The two were a joy on various occasions in life through their artistic creations".
"I have met many happy fellow travellers over the past 80 years in various fields of life. I met many more people who gave me joy than those who gave me pain. As I gratefully accept the joy offered by them, I always desired that I too should be able to give others something that will bring joy to them. My whole life has been a `maifil.' Now is the Bhairvi time".
"Life has been generous to me. I am grateful to it. I remember Ravindranath's lines, which he had recited when he felt it was time for him to say goodbye to life:
Let me say this on this last day
What I have seen
And what I have received
Are unparalleled.''
